The Irish Draught Horse is an active short-shinned, powerful horse with substance and quality. It is renowned for it's strength and placid temperement. According it the old Irish rhyme the Irish Draught Horse could " Plough, sow, reap and mow, go to church and hunt". Thus they were bred to be able to be strong and gentle and have a good trot and be able to gallop and jump.

According to ancient Irish legend;whenever Irish couples got engaged they were presented with a bell. Whenever an argument brewed one partner would ring the bell and the dispute would be instantly settled.
