Mary Cowan is a graduate of the University of Ulster where she specialised in ceramics and sculpture. She has been a member of Bridge Street Studios since November 2009.
Mary hand builds ceramic sculptural forms using molds, coiling and slabbing. Colour is added to pieces by layering oxides and/or mason stains.
Mary’s work is inspired by found objects: organic, natural objects and man made industrial objects. Of particular interest is in how time and the elements change and make their mark on such objects – eroding, rotting and sometimes eventually disintegrating them.
She has exhibited in Dundalk, Kilkenny, Drogheda and Belfast.
Mary has been working as a Community Arts Facilitator for the past 3 years working with a wide range of groups including children, young people and adults with special needs and adult survivors of brain injury. Mary has delivered pottery and recreational art classes to adults at Belfast Metropolitan College and Southern Regional College.
